The Trust celebrates two Clinical Leadership Fellowships

Two mental health clinicians caring for service users across Hertfordshire have been awarded places on a prestigious national Clinical Leadership Fellowships programme offered by the NHS Leadership Academy, which will directly benefit local service users by focusing on quality, innovation, productivity and prevention.

Jemima Burnage and Dr Nick White, who work for the Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) were selected out of over 1,000 entries from around the country and were part of a group of 96 shortlisted and put through rigorous tests and interviews. Jemima and Nick made it through this selection process to be part of the prestigious group of only 60 health professionals consisting of doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists and more.

Jemima is the only social worker in the UK to be selected.

Each will have access to a bespoke leadership development course, aligned to their clinical service. The programme runs on a part-time basis over 9 months in the Fellows’ own organisations and in conjunction with their existing clinical role. Fellows are expected to commit to approximately forty-eight days, eighteen of which will be dedicated to in-service project time, to work on designing and implementing a service transformation project in their work place.

The Academy is recognised at the highest levels. The Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley MP, speaking at an event for Fellows explained how the Fellowship programme benefits organisations and said: “We can really reshape what we do to make it better for patients. We need to benchmark against the best in the world.  We shouldn’t settle for second best. Clinical leadership is at the heart of that."

NHS Chief Executive Sir David Nicholson, speaking at the same event said: “Clinical leadership is the key to reorganisation and with the talent and values of the people in this room, I am confident that we can make real, effective change happen.”

Jemima Burnage, Safeguarding Adults Manager for HPFT commented: "I feel very privileged to be the only social worker in the country to be selected for this wonderful development opportunity, which demonstrates the breath and scope of true clinical leadership across the NHS today.

“My experience of the fellowship has been extremely positive, offering both challenging and exciting development opportunities. We have been honoured by the presence of some high profile, speakers who are experts in their field and benefited from an excellent standard of facilitators. Reflecting on my fellowship experience, I have met and worked with some fantastic and inspiring people and I am proud to be part of the group leading the way in breaking down professional boundaries, as we learn and grow together as leaders."

Dr Nick White, Consultant Clinical Psychologist at HPFT said: “I have learnt a great deal about leadership and service improvement through the course of the fellowship programme so far. I am very pleased to have been given this opportunity and I hope that the services that I am involved in will benefit as a result.”
