How to prevent constipation

  • Plenty of fluids - at least 1500ml per day
  • Plenty of fibre in the diet (with fluid!). Aim for 30g fibre each day
  • Plenty of opportunities to go to the toilet
  • Good toileting positioning
  • Not waiting too long to open your bowels
  • Activity and exercise
  • Medication review of those that cause problematic bowel habits
