Medication that causes constipation

  • Pain relief; Morphine, Co-codamol, Codeine
  • Drugs for Parkinson's disease
  • Tricyclic antidepressants; Amitriptyline
  • Drugs for blood pressure; Verapamil
  • Antipsychotic medication; Clozapine
  • Diuretics; Furosemide
  • Antihistamines
  • Antispasmodics; Hyoscine Butylbromide
  • Calcium containing antacids; 'Rennies'
  • Calcium supplements
  • Iron supplements
  • Antidiarrhoeal agents; Loperamide
  • Anticonvulsants; Phenytoin, Clonazepam
  • NSAIDs; Ibuprofen
  • Some oral contraceptives

Some of these are important and cannot be swapped to an alternative, but some others can.

 

Ask the service user to speak to their GP for support with medication and bowel health.
