HPFT is top of the league for staff motivation for second year running

Staff at Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) would recommend the Trust as a place to work or receive treatment and believe it offers a very high quality of patient care and experience, according to national survey published today.

The results of the 2016 NHS Staff Survey have been published today. This is the 14th annual staff survey which is mandatory for all NHS trusts. The survey is recognised as an important way of gathering feedback from staff to drive service improvements in the NHS. The Care Quality Commission will use the results to help make sure essential safety and quality standards are met.

HPFT staff scored very highly compared with other mental health and learning disability trusts in agreeing that

  • Their role makes a difference to service users and carers
  • The Trust puts the needs of patients and service users first
  • Agreeing that the Trust acts on concerns raised by service users
  • They are able to contribute towards making improvements at work.

 

The survey found staff to be strong advocates for the Trust and the care that it provides. Seventy per cent of HPFT staff agreed that: “If a friend or relative needed treatment, I would be happy with the standard of care provided by this organisation.”  This is an increase of five per cent on the 2015 survey and above the national average of 59%. Staff also believe that the Trust puts the people using its services  first with nearly 80% of staff agreed that service users are the organisation’s top priority.

The Trust received the highest score for staff motivation and engagement for the second year running, as well as being ranked the national best for:

  • The quality of staff appraisal
  • Staff training , learning and development

Of 32 key findings, HPFT’s performance was found to be above average in 20. Only four were below average. The results continue HPFT’s trend of improvement over the last five years.

HPFT’s chief executive Tom Cahill said: “I am delighted to see that for the second year running we are top for staff engagement and motivation. We know that if our staff have a good experience at work then our service users will also have a better experience – and that is bourne out by the fact that staff are very positive about the quality of care they provide and would recommend the trust as a place to work and receive care.”

 

Jinjer Kandola, Deputy CEO and Executive Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “We have been working with staff over the last four years to develop the Trust as both a provider of choice and an employer of choice. We were really pleased to hear from our staff that they feel so motivated and it is great to see that the results have continued to improve year on year.”

A total of 511 HPFT staff took part in the confidential survey which was conducted by the Picker Institute between September and December 2016.

All NHS trusts across the country take part in the survey which asks staff for their views on issues such as appraisals, development, equality and diversity, errors and incidents, health and wellbeing, working patterns, job satisfaction, managers, patient care and experience, and violence, harassment and bullying. Its findings are used to improve working conditions for staff and ultimately improve patient care.
