Positive outcomes for HPFT in NHS Staff Survey 2017 results

The results of the 2017 NHS National Staff Survey have been published today. Local NHS trust Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) has consistently scored above average, with 77% of staff recommending it as a place to work and receive treatment.

Building on the success of past years, staff motivation continues to be an area where the Trust is performing well, as well as the quality of training, learning and development opportunities. In addition to this 78% of staff were highly satisfied with the quality of work and care they are able to deliver.

HPFT staff scored higher than the national average in five key areas

  • Staff agree that they feel motivated in their jobs
  • Staff agree that the Trust uses patient and service user feedback effectively
  • They would recommend the Trust as a place to work or receive treatment
  • They feel that the Trust provides high quality appraisals, non-mandatory training, and learning and development.

This is the 15th annual NHS Staff Survey, which is mandatory for all NHS trusts. The survey is recognised as an important way of gathering feedback from staff to drive service improvements in the NHS. The Care Quality Commission will use the results to help make sure essential safety and quality standards are met.

HPFT’s chief executive Tom Cahill said: “The board and I are really pleased with this result, which is particularly impressive given that staff are working harder than ever to meet an increased demand for our services. Our commitment to delivering great care is at the heart of everything we do. We know that if our staff have a good experience at work then our service users will also have a better experience – and that is bourne out by the fact that staff are very positive about the quality of care they provide and would recommend the trust as a place to work and receive care.”

Jinjer Kandola, Deputy CEO and Executive Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “I am delighted to see that our overall staff engagement score has improved year on year. Our aim is to continue to develop an environment where staff grow, thrive and succeed so that we can attract and retain great people.”

A total of 1369 HPFT staff took part in the confidential survey which was conducted by the Picker Institute between September and December 2017.

All NHS trusts across the country take part in the survey which asks staff for their views on issues such as appraisals, development, equality and diversity, errors and incidents, health and wellbeing, working patterns, job satisfaction, managers, patient care and experience, and violence, harassment and bullying. Its findings are used to improve working conditions for staff and ultimately improve patient care.
