Della O’Donnell wins Mentor of the Year
08 Jul 19 - 08 Jul 19
CAMHS Eating Disorders Nurse, Della O’Donnell has won University of Hertfordshire’s Mentor of the year 2019 Award. Della was nominated by Nursing Associate Lauren Caruana for being a most inspirational and dedicated mentor and supporting her on her journey through the Trainee Nursing Associate (TNA) programme.
Della has worked really hard to ensure that despite very short placements, TNA’s are given a full and well-rounded experience, gaining as much knowledge about eating disorders as possible. She has developed an Experience Checklist and Student Information Pack for them, to ensure their placements are always fulfilling.
CAMHS Community Manager for Eating Disorders Penny Smith said: “Della has not only supported me from within the team, she has also gone out of her way to make TNA meetings a priority for her to attend, which shows her incredible work ethic.”
Kirstin Paisley Pearce Practice Educator Facilitator for TNAs said: ‘Della is warm, approachable and proud of her team. She has supported visiting TNA’s whole-heartedly and has contributed to the learning of my whole cohort. Her love for her job and specialism echoed through, when she presented at the university to a class of 50.”
Della said: “I was so surprised to win the award, as I was just pleased to have been shortlisted. I enjoyed working with Lauren through her two year course and attending her graduation, when I met up again with the TNAs that have joined our team on placement. They have all been so enthusiastic, as well as bringing their own knowledge from their field of nursing with them.”
Bina Jumnoodoo HPFT’s Head of Nursing, East and North SBU made a surprise visit to Eating Disorders team meeting in July, to present Della with some beautiful flowers and thank her for being such an amazing role model.
