HPFT Mental Health Nurse humbled to receive national Cavell star Award

Eager Lunga is a mental health nurse and team leader on Owl Ward at Kingfisher Court – she’s worked at Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) for the last six years. Eager was the proud recipient of a national Cavell Star Award in September, after being nominated by HPFT’s Executive Director for Quality and Safety and Chief Nurse Dr Jane Padmore.

When asked what made her want to become a Mental Health Nurse, Eager said: “Making a difference to other people’s lives has always been my passion and I have no regrets since I became a nurse. I worked in other professions before, as a result of my parents and professional careers guidance, but did not get the same job satisfaction.”
Eager continued: “I always try to be a source of hope to service users, families and carers. It’s important to be able to see the person and not the illness or diagnosis. This is a huge task which requires an enabling environment and support systems.”
Cavell Star Awards are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and health care assistants, who shine bright and show exceptional care to colleagues, patients and/or patients families.
Jane Padmore said: “I nominated Eager for a Cavell Award because every time I hear about or meet with Eager her compassion and care for her colleagues shines through. She has a quiet strength and integrity that is always evident. Eager develops those she leads and then supports them to explore new, more senior roles, even if it means it creates a gap in her own team. I have great admiration for Eager’s quiet yet powerful leadership and know it has an impact on her colleagues and service users“
Eager said: “Receiving a Cavell Award was a nice surprise and I feel humbled to realise that there are people who believe in the work I do - thank you. Also I would like to thank my family, Owl Ward colleagues and my supervisors - previous and current for all their guidance.“
