Mental health accommodation ‘The Stewarts’ opens in Harpenden

13 Jun 25

In partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing (MTVH), HPFT have opened new accommodation in Harpenden to support service users with their mental health as they leave hospital.

The accommodation, named The Stewarts, will provide 14 individual bedrooms with private en-suites to individuals who have left hospital but are not quite ready to live independently. The support offered will help to refresh their skills in a supportive, modern environment and will include things such as managing finances, cleaning and cooking.

The service will also accommodate service users who are being looked after by community teams but are continuing to struggle. Being supported at The Stewarts provides an opportunity for them to regulate and reduce the likelihood of a hospital admission.

The Stewarts has been designed in collaboration with service users who have lived experience at Midpoint – the same service which exists in Stevenage. The accommodation includes a nature-filled outdoor space, multipurpose living areas, and fully accessible en-suite bedrooms.

The building was officially opened ahead of service users moving in by Karen Taylor, HPFT Chief Executive, Chris Badger, Executive Director of Adult Care Services at Hertfordshire County Council and Rob Bowley, Head of Business Development, MTVH.

Karen Taylor, HPFT Chief Executive said:

“This will be a fantastic service for those who are ready to be discharged from hospital but need some additional help before they can confidently return home. We are delighted to be partnering with the council and MTVH to deliver this important part of the recovery journey for service users.”
