The meaning of music and music therapy
This piece was created by Mark Cheer—his chosen artistic name, which he describes as a “happy name” that brings joy to others. Mark Cheer has a deep love for music; he collects and plays various instruments and often says, “Music keeps me going.” His compositions usually begin with simple, repetitive notes and gradually build with added layers and melodic lines. The ambient, immersive quality of his sound often reminds me of Pink Floyd, which is also one of Mark’s favourite bands.
Mark didn’t want to give this piece a specific title. However, it starts with a minimal, repeating motif that gradually expands with different instrumental sounds—incorporating eight different musical instruments throughout the piece. Interestingly, construction noise was unintentionally recorded that day, but it complements his vision of using music to reflect and shape the surrounding atmosphere. The piece also captures how he feels and perceives the moment, making it a deeply personal and expressive work.
Sharing his music with a wider audience has always been important to Mark. Music therapy sessions became a space for both creative expression and emotional support. There were times when Mark found it difficult to articulate his thoughts, and during those moments, we turned to music – writing songs together as a way to express what words couldn’t.
Creating and sharing music through these sessions gave him a sense of purpose and helped boost his confidence. We invite you to listen with openness and experience the atmosphere and emotion Mark has woven into the sound.
