Liquid or orodispersible formulations

Sometimes a liquid formulation or an orodispersible preparation of a medicine is required for a service user with swallowing difficulty or concordance problem. These alternative formulations are often significantly more expensive than solid dose forms and some may only be available as an unlicensed special order preparation. Prescribers must carefully consider the need for these formulations before prescribing and be able to justify their use. Further advice and information can be sought from the Pharmacy and Medicines Management Team. A non-formulary medicine request form will need to be made for unlicensed liquid preparations.
