Recruiting and retaining talented, caring staff is essential to delivering great care.
We want to attract the best and brightest people to work at HPFT and that means looking after you from the moment you apply for a role at the Trust and throughout your career with us. We believe our staff are our most valuable asset – and we also believe that investing in colleagues is crucial if we want to enable everyone to reach their full potential.
As a University Trust we recognise the importance of supporting our workforce to deliver the right care in the most effective way. That means making sure staff can access outstanding learning and development opportunities whilst pursuing their careers within the Trust.
We also want to make it easy for people to return to work after a break, to come back to work after they’ve retired and to move around the Trust easily so they can explore new roles and take on new challenges.
Returning to work after a career break
If you’ve taken a break from nursing but now want to return to professional practice, we can support you.
We can help you to update your skills, renew your registration and re-enter the workplace.
Our return to practice programme will give you the opportunity to work in a range of hospital and community-based services while you complete your transition back to employment.

Returning to work after retirement
At HPFT we run a ‘retire and return’ scheme which helps staff to return to paid employment after retirement. We support staff to identify suitable posts and explore options with them for flexible, part-time or bank working.
Retire and return is a great way for the Trust to retain talented individuals who want to retire but continue to work. It can also help with the transition from employment to retirement and enables staff to continue to use their skills and knowledge to support our service users.

Moving easily around the Trust
We have created a streamlined internal moves process which helps staff easily change to a different role within the Trust. If there’s a similar band role available elsewhere, staff can apply without having to go through an open recruitment process. Our aim is to help staff develop their careers and get as much experience as they can within the Trust, rather than looking further afield.
We want all our staff to achieve a balance between work and life outside work. We will consider any applicant who wants to work on a flexible basis – and we have a number of options available.
