Trust celebrates being Highly Commended at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards

28 Sep 23

The Simulation Hub team at HPFT were delighted to be Highly Commended at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

The prestigious ceremony, held in Manchester, was an opportunity for HPFT colleagues to hear about new innovations and best practice from across the country.

The Simulation Hub is an innovative training facility which places staff in an environment accurate to scenarios they would face in real life (whether on ward or in the community) alongside trained actors who take on the roles of service users or carers. Co-produced with our experts by experience, the training provides staff with a safe, judgement-free, practical space that is almost identical to the working environment, recreating the kinds of challenges that can occur in normal day-to-day work.

The simulation suite consists of clinical skills laboratories and simulation and debrief rooms that contain high-fidelity mannequins and cameras.

The simulation-based training is helping to improve skills in mental health, physical health and learning disabilities. The simulation Hub is delivering a multiagency suicide prevention training across the integrated care system supporting the implementation of a evidence based Suicide Prevention Pathway in Hertfordshire. Over the last year, around 400 staff from across various teams including mental health, GPs, emergency services, drugs and alcohol services, staff from acute trusts, medical and nursing students completed the training.

Dr Rakesh Magon, Consultant Psychiatrist & Deputy Medical Director at HPFT said:

“It was an honour to be Highly Commended at the HSJ Awards and we were up against some strong competition. We are delighted with how well the Simulation Hub is working and for this to be recognised at such a prestigious event was testament to the hard work of my colleagues including our experts by experience and the simulation faculty, for making this such a successful facility.”
