New liaison and diversion service launched for vulnerable people in the Criminal Justice System in Hertfordshire

01 Jul 20

The newly created Criminal Justice Liaison and Diversion Team (CJL&DT) at Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) is providing an all-age screening and assessment service to vulnerable individuals in Hertfordshire, who are involved in the criminal justice system.

The service launched on 1 July 2020, with a team of staff who are based at Hatfield Police Station, Stevenage Police Custody Suite, Stevenage and St Alban’s Magistrates Courts, St Alban’s Crown Court and Hatfield Remand Court.

The team includes Psychologists, Nursing Practitioners, Social Workers, Support, Time and Recovery (STAR) Workers and Administrators who will provide assessments for people, together with a range of other support services.

Working alongside the police, courts, probation services, prison in-reach services and other organisations, the team will be offering advice and helping to ensure the criminal justice process is safe, fair and takes people’s vulnerabilities into account. Staff will also be working with people in the community by supporting them in addressing their health and social care needs.

Sandra Brookes, HPFT’s Executive Director of Service Delivery and Customer Experience said: “This new service will ensure we can provide valuable support to vulnerable individuals both on site and in the community, helping them through the process and/or helping to prevent them from re-offending.

“We are delighted to be working alongside colleagues in the Criminal Justice System and other organisations and look forward to supporting them with our new services and professional guidance.”

East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) in partnership with HPFT has been awarded a five-year contract to provide a Liaison & Diversion Service (L&DS) across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire by NHS England. ELFT is already providing the service in Bedfordshire and Luton and from 1 July is sub-contracting HPFT to provide the Hertfordshire service.
