Carers Week 2023

Carers Week is dedicated to raising awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.  In the video below we hear from Sandra Brookes, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, on the importance of recognising and supporting carers and valuing their experience.  

To mark the week, the Trust and other organisations will be holding a range of events and drop-in sessions, training and webinars. Take a look below to find out what is happening:

5 June

Care for Carers' Webinar
2.00pm – 3.00pm

Recognising and Supporting Unpaid Carers in their Vital Role webinar is for carers struggling with the pressures of their caring role. It offers insights into the common triggers and symptoms of carer stress and provides guidance on cognitive and behavioural techniques which you can learn and use yourself to tackle these symptoms. It includes information about the support offered by the Wellbeing Service for anyone interested in engaging more closely with the team.

Key topics covered:

  • Common carer difficulties: a nutshell summary of the typical issues facing carers
  • About CBT: A way to look at emotional distress using the cognitive behavioural model, featuring case studies.

‘Carers: Managing Difficult Emotions and Building Resilience’ Webinar
10:30am – 11:30am

Overview of the webinar: Carers: Managing Difficult Emotions and Building Resilience webinar looks at the complex and sometimes painful emotions which can accompany the caring role. It recognises that caring can be a gradual and unexpected challenge, bringing some reward but also resentment, guilt, grief and loss. The webinar provides several tools for building emotional resilience and includes a relaxing experiential exercise. It includes information about the support offered by the Wellbeing Service for anyone interested in engaging more closely with the team.

Key topics covered:

  • The personal impact of caring: a review of the way caring can become part of what you do, and the diverse ways this can impact on emotions
  • Difficult emotions: a frank discussion around emotions common to carers, but which are often difficult to admit to, including guilt, resentment, grief and loneliness
  • Building resilience: techniques and strategies to maintain emotional strength, locate and draw on resources, and learn greater self-care and compassion.
