Staff suicide – an important issue to address as part of World Suicide Prevention Day

12 Sep 24

Suicide is devastating - for the individuals, families, friends and communities who are impacted. It also affects professionals who support those going through crisis.

An event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day and Emergency Services Day was held by Hertfordshire County Council. It was aimed at professionals who support others in Hertfordshire in trauma-facing roles, including the police, fire service, emergency call handlers, paramedics, nurses, teachers, dentists, veterinary staff, and social workers.

HPFT Chief Nurse Dr Emma Wadey spoke at the event about suicide prevention in healthcare staff and covered issues such as workforce pressures and the emotional burden of care giving. Emma highlighted the support that is available for staff such as mental health and wellbeing hubs and wellbeing programmes. She also spoke about the NHS Staff Suicide Prevention Programme.
