HPFT’s ECT service achieves fourth national accreditation

20 Mar 26

Our Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) service is celebrating after receiving its fourth consecutive accreditation from the Electroconvulsive Therapy Accreditation Service (ECTAS), marking more than 11 years of delivering safe, high‑quality and compassionate ECT treatment at HPFT.

HPFT’s ECT service is delivered by our Neuromodulation team, which brings together psychiatrists, nurses, anaesthetists, operating department practitioners and administrative colleagues. ECT is a specialist treatment used to help people with severe mental health conditions – it involves giving a brief, carefully controlled stimulation to the brain while the person is safely asleep under general anaesthetic.

ECTAS, run by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, reviews ECT services across the UK to ensure they meet strict standards for safety, service user experience, training and clinical practice.

During our latest review, our service was particularly praised for overall service user experience, including monitoring and follow‑up care as well as staff training and research.

Rita, Neuromodulation Lead Nurse, shared:

“This accreditation is an endorsement of the consistently high standards of care we provide and reflects the commitment, skill and compassion of the whole team.

“We are proud of the care we provide and of the way we continue to learn and improve for the benefit of service users.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic achievement!
