25 Mar 26

Individuals who are in a mental health crisis will benefit from a new service that has opened in Buntingford. It offers a homely environment for those in need of some enhanced support with their mental health who don't at the point of assessment, need an acute admission to hospital.

A large red‑brick detached house with white window frames, a central porch supported by columns, and a paved driveway in front. A small tree stands to the left.

Pendle is delivered in partnership by Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) and national charity Waythrough which has a wealth of experience providing similar services across the UK. It comprises of 7 bedrooms and each has an ensuite. There is access to a garden and there is also a sensory room. One to one support, daily activities and wellbeing sessions help to build the confidence and resilience of service users during recovery.

Katy Healy, Chief Operating Officer, HPFT said:

“We are delighted to open this new safe and supportive environment for people in crisis in the community. When we can support people in an environment suited to their needs, we know the opportunity for recovery is far greater.  The team at Pendle will support people in crisis to rebuild their confidence and independence whilst staying connected with families, friends and partner organisations, so that the support doesn’t end when they leave.”

Kevin Sauboorah, Director of South East services for Waythrough said:

“We’re excited to partner with Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust to bring this much needed service to Buntingford. Pendle offers a safe and therapeutic place for people to pause, recover and regain their sense of control. Our experience of running similar services nationally has consistently shown that when individuals are met with warmth, respect and the right support, they can move through a crisis and make real, long-term changes. Were confident Pendle will be a valuable source of hope and support for people across the local area.”

The service reflects HPFT’s commitment to providing compassionate care which puts individuals at the heart of all decisions about their health and wellbeing and empowers them to recover and thrive in their communities.

Referrals to Pendle are made through community mental health teams, the crisis resolution home treatment team and psychiatric hospitals. People cannot walk in or self-refer.
