Mental Health Awareness Week - the power of community

12 May 25

Mental Health Awareness Week is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on the importance of our mental wellbeing which is as important as our physical health. The theme this year is about the power and importance of community.

The words mental health in black on a brown and white background of white jigsaw pieces

Whether it is family, friends, neighbours, schools, clubs and activities, work – all of these people form part of our community and are the supportive network around us which show that we are not alone.

There are things we can doing individually to make sure we are looking after ourselves and also those around us.

·       Getting enough sleep (8 hours on average)

·       Eating a balanced diet

·       Cutting down on alcohol and caffeine

·       Taking some daily exercise

·       Spending time doing something you enjoy whether that is reading, knitting, seeing friends, going to the movies and just taking time out for yourself

·       Spending time in nature

·       Limiting your screen time

Fiona Roberts, Clinical Director of Psychological Services,  HPFT said:

“The power of community cannot be underestimated and just talking to someone who you trust can feel like a weight has been lifted when things are a little overwhelming. However, this may feel too hard to do for various reasons and is why we have our Talking Therapies service available for free and confidential support, alongside evidence based psychological therapies. There is access to one-to-one and group sessions as well as free webinars and resources on the website.”

The Talking Therapies website can be accessed here:  www.hpft-talkingtherapies.nhs.uk

For other sources of support you can contact your GP, or you can call NHS 111 option 2 or our 24/7 Single Point of Access (SPA) mental health helpline on 0800 6444 101.

Please call 999 or go to A&E if it is an emergency, which means that there is an immediate risk of harm to yourself or someone else.
