Carers Rights Day: Support and resources for carers

18 Nov 24

At HPFT, we understand the impact that caring responsibilities have on unpaid carers, and the importance of supporting them to improve their own health and wellbeing.

On Thursday 21 November, it’s Carers Rights Day.

There are currently 5.7 million unpaid carers in the UK – Carers Rights Day is about raising awareness of the rights that unpaid carers are entitled to and helping them to get the support they need.

Who is considered a carer?

Every day, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member or a friend – many of whom do not see themselves as carers and are often unaware of their legal rights and what support and benefits they are entitled to.

You are a carer if you provide unpaid help and support to a family member, friend or neighbour who would otherwise not be able to manage without this support. Anyone can become a carer, and carers come from all walks of life, all cultures, and can be any age.

I am a carer – what resources are available to me?

As a carer, knowing your rights empowers you with information about what you’re entitled to. This helps you feel confident asking for what you need, as well as challenging things when your rights are not being met.

We believe that carers should be able to seek the support they need at the time that they need it.

We provide a wide range of information that gives essential information for carers about their role and how they can get the support they need – please visit the carers section of our website for more information.
