NHS England’s Chief Nursing Information Officer and Director of Digital Clinical Safety visits HPFT.

31 Mar 23

Dr Natasha Phillips, Chief Nursing Information Officer and Director of Digital Clinical Safety at NHS England visited the Trust on Friday 31 March 2023 as part of her role at a national level to improve the use of technology in the delivery of care.

Dr Phillips’ work aims to help the NHS to use digital innovation to continuously improve the quality and safety of clinical care and she was interested in understanding some of the technological developments currently in use at HPFT.

The visit started on the inpatient wards at Kingfisher court, where Dr Phillips met with clinical teams to understand how they are using new technology in their work. Staff were proud to demonstrate some of the digital innovations they are piloting, such as the electronic observations tool (eObs), the Blue Box physical health monitoring kit and the electronic prescribing and medicines administration system (ePMA).  Dr Phillips was able to see how the teams had integrated the new technologies into their daily routines, giving them more time with their service users.

Dr Phillips also visited the Innovation Hub and the Simulation Suite at the Trust’s head office.  The Simulation Suite is an innovative training facility which places staff in an environment accurate to scenarios they would face in real life, often alongside trained actors who take on the roles of service users.

Dr Natasha Phillips, Chief Nursing Information Officer and Director of Digital Clinical Safety, said:

“There is an engaging and proud workforce. The willingness to build strong relationships between the digital teams and the front line teams who are supportive of the adoption of technology. The multiplicity of lots of different projects contribute to a bigger aim and the team is growing to achieve these demands. The strong focus on development is paying dividends. I particularly like the digital literacy tool which identifies where individuals need to develop in their digital literacy skills and helps the organisation to identify what the staff are at and the Here Me Now app which is person centred.”
