HPFT service user contributes to new book on Electroconvulsive Therapy

11 Jul 25

An HPFT service user has made an important contribution to a new book that shares people’s positive experiences of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a treatment that involves sending an electric current through the brain to relieve severe symptoms of certain mental health conditions.

Front cover of the Waves of Hope - personal stories of ECT. It is an orange skyline with a black silhouette of people looking out to sea

Lucy, who has undergone ECT many times, chose to share her personal experience to highlight the benefits people have found from this treatment and to dispel some of the myths and misinformation that surround it.  Lucy also hopes it will provide reassurance for others who may be going through a similar experience, as well as for their family and carers.

Lucy explains more about her involvement.

“I got involved in the book through one of the lead nurses at HPFT who works in the ECT suite. She knew Dr George who authored the book and I thought this sounded like a positive thing to get involved with.

“It was also a great opportunity to meet others who have been through a similar experience, as you don’t often get to speak to people who have had this treatment.”
