Celebrating our mental health nurses

21 Feb 25

Today marks the 7th annual Mental Health Nurses’ Day. It is an opportunity to highlight our mental health nurses across the Trust who do such fantastic work every day, providing care and support to individuals seeking help.

HPFT has more than 850 mental health nurses in diverse roles across the Trust who work in different areas including CYPMHS (Children and Young People Mental Health Services), adult inpatient units and the community.

To mark the day, we have spoken to some of our nurses, asking them about their role and what inspired them to pursue this particular path.

Solomon, Mental Health Nurse, Swift Ward:

“My journey into mental health nursing was inspired by wanting to support those in need and challenging the stigma surrounding mental health. What drives me most is the privilege of seeing the individual beyond their illness and helping someone on their journey to recovery is incredibly fulfilling.”

Patience, Community Mental Health Nurse:

“My inspiration to become a mental health nurse began with a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals facing mental health challenges. I have also witnessed the impact of mental illness on friends and family which led me to pursue this career. It is a unique opportunity to combine my compassion with clinical expertise, enabling me to provide holistic care while advocating for service users’ rights and dignity. Ultimately, my work in mental health nursing not only contributes to the well-being of others but also enriches my own life with purpose and meaning.”

Adaugo, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Community Mental Health Services:

“Advocating for service users and making even a small difference in their lives is truly inspiring. Mental health nursing is more than just a profession—it is a commitment to compassionate care, empowerment, and resilience.”

Sarah, Mental Health Nurse:

“I was a general nurse specialising in head and neck trauma when I decided to change direction and applied to do mental health nurse training. It was absolutely the best decision I ever made regarding my career. There are so many specialist areas to work in. I work in the Integrated care team in primary care in East Hertfordshire. It's a truly holistic team and very rewarding.”
