Service users at Seward Lodge have been enjoying therapeutic gardening sessions with some wonderfully colourful results.

Seward Lodge is HPFT’s assessment and treatment unit for older people, providing a safe and compassionate environment to provide specialist care for people with dementia diagnoses.

During these structured sessions, service users are given the opportunity to choose which seeds they would like to plant, and then to consider how they would like the flowers to be arranged.

Gardening sessions present a wealth of benefits for service users, including the opportunity for social interaction, physical activity and cognitive stimulation – moreover, having access to plants and herbs in the unit’s garden can provide sensory stimulation and helps to foster a connection with nature. These can all help to enhance mood and wellbeing, creating a tranquil outdoor space to spend time in.

The sessions provide service users with a sense of focus, purpose and structure and enables them to feel helpful and valued.
