“Let’s talk about poo” - constipation awareness campaign

21 Feb 25

Did you know that people with a learning disability may be less likely to notice if they’re having symptoms of constipation, or be able to communicate their symptoms?

While constipation is common and can happen to everyone, this can become life-threatening for some, such as for people with a learning disability or autism. If left untreated, this can cause serious consequences – 23% of people with a learning disability who died in 2019 had constipation as a long-term condition.

However, by making some simple changes to diet and lifestyle, this can help to prevent and treat constipation.

If you care for someone with a learning disability, you can help keep them safe and healthy. Talk to them about the signs of constipation and get them medical support if necessary.

HPFT, as part of the Essex Learning Disability Partnership, have been supporting a “Let’s talk about poo” awareness campaign run by Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System, offering useful advice about managing constipation such as through diet, hydration, healthy digestion, tracking bowel habits, bowel screening, and exercise – find out more here
