Standing firm in power and pride: HPFT celebrates Black History Month

08 Oct 25

The Trust began Black History Month celebrations by bringing together staff and service users under the theme “Standing firm in power and pride.”

The event looked to celebrate and recognise each other’s contributions and to be an important part of the ongoing journey to make HPFT the best place to work for everyone.

Opening the event, Jo Humphries, Chief People Officer at HPFT highlighted how ‘we want to challenge ourselves as a Trust on how we can make a difference.’   HPFT’s embRACE Network Chair Angela Hughes reminded attendees of the famous saying… ‘if you want to see change, you need to be the change you want to see.’

Attendees connected with one another, shared their stories, and reflected on what it means to stand firm in pride and power. As part of this, the event focussed on three key areas: What is it like to be black and work here? What is it like to be black and receive your care here? And, what is it like to be black in our community? There was also an opportunity for attendees to pose questions to a panel of staff from across the Trust.

As the day drew to a close, colleagues shared plans for the future, including a calendar of events and action plans on belonging and inclusion, violence and aggression and racism, cultural sensitivity in care and community development.
