Mothers share a picnic for maternal mental health

09 May 25

This week is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is “Your Voice, Your Strength”.

To celebrate the week, our Thumbswood team (specialist mother and baby inpatient unit) held a picnic bringing together mothers who are currently receiving care at the unit, and those who were previously supported by the team, to share their stories and inspire each other.

The team celebrate with a picnic every year to help the mothers who are currently in Thumbswood to feel hopeful and encouraged for their own recovery.

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the mental health challenges that can affect women during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Did you know that perinatal mental health conditions such as postnatal depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and postpartum psychosis can affect up to 1 in 5 new mothers?

At HPFT, we have a dedicated Community Perinatal Team, supporting women who are experiencing, or are at high risk of experiencing, moderate to severe mental health difficulties when they are pregnant and after having their baby.

We also have our specialist mother and baby inpatient unit, Thumbswood, which offers a safe and therapeutic environment where women can receive mental health care and treatment without being separated from their babies. If you get admitted to our unit, we want to make sure that both you and your baby feel safe and secure.
