Picturesque nature room unveiled at children and young people’s service

10 Feb 25

A clinic room has been transformed into a new nature room at Saffron Ground, one of HPFT’s community specialist clinics for children and young people (CYP).

A nature-themed room with a mural of a lake and trees, stools that resemble tree stumps, sofas, a fish tank, and ceiling lights depicting a blue sky and clouds.

Saffron Ground offers specialist support for children, young people and their families who are struggling with their feelings, thoughts or behaviour.

Many of the young people have neurodiverse needs and sensory preferences, so it was important to create a space that cultivated a sense of calm and comfort, by engaging all of the senses and adding an element of fun and excitement to their visits.

Young people’s voices played a significant role in decisions about what the room looked like, sounded like and smelled like. Thanks to their ideas, the room incorporates floral scents, it includes the sound of water and it’s got fun and comfy furniture.

The young people have expressed that the room makes them feel happy, safe, cosy and peaceful! Here are some of their thoughts:

“I’m so excited! It’s been really fun, something adventurous and something new. It’s been really nice to be involved and it’s increased my confidence.”

“It made me feel like I had value in something that is bigger than me. This service is really important and helps so many people. If a small thing I have contributed to gets left behind when I leave, that will be amazing.”

“It’s been nice to work with the staff and they treat us as equals. It is important to involve our voices as we are the people using the services and we can help shape the services with our suggestions.”

The staff involved were incredibly pleased with the young people’s enthusiasm towards the project. They have shared their thoughts:

“It really brought out the best in them – it gives them the opportunity to feel more relaxed and at home, and being part of that has been so gratifying.”

“This is so important because we want the young people to have the best experience. Incorporating their views was essential in helping us understand what they need.”

“This project was also about connection, and organic friendships were made!”
