Trust’s innovative mental health initiatives showcased at RCPsych Liaison Faculty Annual Conference

31 May 24

"Liaison Psychiatry: Adapting to the Future of Healthcare" was the theme of this year’s RCPsych Liaison Faculty Annual Conference, with HPFT professionals invited to present and run workshops as part of the three-day event.

Dr Ikbal Kaur Bahia and Dr Meda Alinia shared how they’ve been raising mental health knowledge, awareness and skills of acute hospital staff, and a reflective evaluation of our diabetes mental health liaison service was presented by Dr Laxmi Patel, Mary Ahsan and Dr Sabina Mazoruk.

Ikbal and Meda’s interactive workshop outlined a recent quality improvement project which aimed to raise the mental health skills of acute hospital staff via the facilitation of reflective practice meetings with mental health liaison team members. They were able to present key findings of their project, including challenges, and planned future work.

Laxmi, Mary and Sabina’s session shared information about our Diabetes Mental Health Liaison team in West Hertfordshire – a unique service embedding combined psychiatry and clinical psychology into the local diabetes service. The session showed how well the service supports individuals with complex mental health difficulties, thus helping to reduce the risk of severe complications as a result of their issues with diabetes management. The service has been running for 6 years and the team were able to share their outcomes along with some great practice and service improvement recommendations with delegates.

Dr Fiona Roberts, Clinical Director of Psychological Services (Chief Psychological Professions Officer) says: “We are incredibly proud of Ikbal, Sabina, Laxmi and Mary for sharing their good practice at the Royal College of Psychiatry Liaison Conference alongside colleagues. This is a developing field which offers enormous possibilities to improve health care in the future.”
