Astley Court at Little Plumstead Hospital has received a positive report following a recent Mental Health Act (MHA) monitoring visit by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The visit reviewed how the Mental Health Act is applied on the ward, including service users’ experience, their rights, dignity and the quality of care provided. The inspection team observed day-to-day care, reviewed records and documentation, and spoke with service users, carers and staff.

Feedback from service users was very positive. People described staff as kind, respectful and responsive to their individual needs and preferences. They highlighted the range of activities available, including art sessions, walks and trips out, and said they felt supported to understand their care and treatment.

Carers also shared positive feedback. They said staff were caring, flexible and kept them well informed. They valued being involved in care planning and decisions about their loved ones’ care.

The visit highlighted several areas of strong practice, including:

  • The use of least restrictive options, based on individual risk assessments
  • Respect for service users’ dignity and privacy
  • Promoting service user involvement, rights and access to advocacy

The feedback recognises the commitment and professionalism of the whole Astley Court team in supporting people’s rights, wellbeing and recovery.

Tina Kavanagh, HPFT’s Head of Legislation and Compliance, said:

“This is truly outstanding. The team have done a fantastic job. Congratulations to everyone involved. Your hard work and dedication have paid off.”
