HPFT’s older people’s community mental health services rated Good by CQC

Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust’s community based mental health services for older people have been rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), following an inspection in May 2026.

Inspectors visited four of our older people’s services, which provide assessment, treatment and support for those living with mental health conditions in the community across Hertfordshire. They were rated Good across all five inspection areas – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The inspectors spoke with people using services and their families and reviewed a wide range of information about how care is delivered including observing individual care records.

The report highlights the compassionate and person-centred care provided by staff, with people using services describing teams as “excellent”, “very good” and “lovely” and praising staff for being “always helpful.” Family members spoke positively about how they felt listened to, respected and supported.

Inspectors found that staff built strong relationships with service users and their families, taking the time to understand their individual needs and preferences. They recognised the collaborative work alongside community mental health teams, crisis services and memory services, as well as with GPs, social care teams and other partners, to provide joined-up and coordinated care.

The report also recognised several areas of outstanding practice. Inspectors praised the delivery of evidence-based care and treatment, highlighting the wide range of specialist support available, including psychological therapies, memory groups, walking groups and recovery-focused activities. They also recognised innovative work to support people living with dementia, including the use of digital technology to help improve care

The inspection found a positive culture focused on safety, openness and continuous learning, with staff encouraged to share learning and build on good practice. Inspectors reported that staff felt respected, supported and valued, and were proud to work within older people's mental health services.

The report also highlights the Trust’s commitment to supporting people beyond their clinical care. This includes dedicated support for carers, community-based groups that promote wellbeing and independence, specialist frailty support, and initiatives designed to reduce inequalities and improve access to services.
