29 Oct 24

Earlier this month, the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Intellectual Disability Faculty Conference in Birmingham showcased research from across the UK. Seven projects from HPFT were presented as academic posters at the event.

Poster topics included the development and evaluation of the Norfolk Forensic Community Learning Disability team; introducing oral health screening within an inpatient intellectual disability service and the introduction of cancer screening within an enhanced physical health clinic for people with intellectual disabilities and mental health difficulties.

Verity Chester, HPFT Research Associate and RADiANT Network Manager, said:
“We submitted the projects we had recently completed, where data had been analysed and the results were ready to share. We were thrilled to hear that they had all been accepted. It's quite unique for a team to be so research-active alongside their clinical commitments, and we’re proud to contribute to the field in this way.”

Each project offers fresh insights into various aspects of care, and all have helped make meaningful contributions to improving understanding and outcomes for those with learning disabilities.

As part of the main programme of the conference, Professor Regi Alexander, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Trust, also gave a talk on “Psychosis in Autism: diagnostic and treatment challenges”. His presentation addressed the complexities of diagnosing and treating psychosis in individuals with autism, a subject of growing interest and importance in the field of intellectual disability psychiatry.
