The Trust has been recognised for implementing a new digital tool which makes it easier for service users to share their views and improve mental health services.

Colleagues were finalists in the Improving Mental Health through Digital category at the HSJ Digital Awards for their short questionnaire which asks people receiving mental health care how satisfied they are with different areas of their life and treatment. This includes things like mental health, relationships, safety, and medication. The answers are then added to their health records, helping clinicians understand their needs better and make shared decisions during appointments.

The tool is accessed through people’s smartphones and means people can answer the questions at a time which suits them.  So far, over 47,000 responses have been collected from nearly 20,000 service users who have said how “it helped me get my words out” and “it was easy to understand.”

Key findings have shown how women reported lower satisfaction with their mental and physical health; men were less satisfied with their relationships and sense of safety, and service users recently discharged and then re-referred were less satisfied than new service users.

Dr Chetan Shah, Research Strategy Operational Lead at HPFT, said:

“This project has really helped with our ambition to make services more effective and inclusive. It has even influenced national policy and NHS England are creating a case study based on it, which is really positive.

“Looking ahead we are working to further analyse the results and have developed dashboards for clinicians to track the progress of service users over time.”
