Breaking down barriers

04 Feb 26

HPFT recently took part in the Watford African Caribbean Association (WACA) Dementia Awareness Day, an event focused on reducing stigma and improving understanding of dementia within the community.

An audience sits in a hall facing a speaker on stage, with two WACA information banners displayed at the front.

Colleagues from our Early Memory Diagnosis and Support Service (EMDASS) attended alongside partner organisations including Rennie Grove Hospice, Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK and Living Well Insights. The event was funded by Hertfordshire County Council.

Dr Shaheen Shora, Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director at HPFT, delivered a talk on the different types of dementia, early signs and symptoms, and common misconceptions. She also joined a panel discussion exploring cultural attitudes, barriers to accessing support, and the lived experiences of Black African and Caribbean families affected by dementia.

Taking part in WACA’s Dementia Awareness Day was an important step in reaching underserved communities, building trust and encouraging people to seek help early. By working closely with community partners, we are committed to breaking down barriers to care and ensuring people from Black African and Caribbean backgrounds feel understood and supported.

WACA, established in 1976, is one of the UK’s longest‑running African Caribbean associations, providing a wide range of community‑led services for people in and around Watford.
