This National Apprenticeship Week we are taking the opportunity to celebrate our amazing apprentices and the impact they have on individuals, teams, and our Trust as a whole. Check out our social media channels to meet Leyla, Tara, Dean and Amy.

The Trust has over 100 apprentices currently working across different services, both clinical and non-clinical, who are supported in developing skills and creating careers at all levels. These include Nursing Associates, Occupational Therapists, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners, Pharmacy Technicians and Social Workers.  Non-clinical apprenticeships include Chartered Managers, People Professionals, Data Analysts and Business Administration.

The need for hands-on experience, industry-recognised qualifications, and career-ready skills has never been greater than it is now.  Apprenticeships offer routes into career development, bridging the gap between education and employment, whilst allowing individuals to earn as they learn.

·       Benefits for individuals

o   Earn while you learn – get paid and earn a salary whilst gaining industry related and relevant qualifications

o   Clear pathways for career development and progression

o   Recognised qualifications – gain accredited qualifications without student debt

o   Skill development – develop technical, professional and soft skills that are relevant to the role

o   Gain valuable workplace experience

There are some common myths about apprenticeships:

Apprenticeships are only for school leaders or young people
The Truth: apprenticeships are available to people of all ages from school leavers to career changers and experienced employees looking to upskill.

Apprenticeships are only for trade or manual jobs
The Truth: apprenticeships have strong roots in skills trades like construction and engineering, however over the years they have expanded in a huge range of industries including health and social care, digital technology, finances, legal services, business management, human resources and much more.

Apprenticeships don’t offer ‘real’ qualifications
The Truth: apprenticeships provide nationally recognised qualifications that are often equivalent to traditional education routes.

Apprentices get ‘stuck’ in one job or career path
The Truth: apprenticeships provide many transferable skills, networking opportunities and industry knowledge, making career changes easier, not harder.

Apprenticeships are too time consuming for managers
The Truth: yes apprentices need support, however a structured training plan and mentoring actually reduce long term workload by developing skilled employees who contribute to the team

Apprentices won’t be as productive as experienced staff
The Truth: whilst apprentices need time to develop, they bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.  With the right support, many become product team members very quickly.

Apprenticeships are only for junior or entry-level roles
The Truth: apprenticeships are available at all levels, including leadership management and technical specialisms.  As an example, they can provide fantastic opportunities to build leadership skills and confidence for first time and existing managers.
