Young people at the heart of service improvements

07 Sep 26

Young people and families are helping to shape the future of mental health services in East Hertfordshire through a growing programme of co-production led by Children and Young People's Mental Health Services (CYPMHS).

Small therapeutic room with a countryside wall mural, a pink beanbag, cream armchair and small table. A desk and chair sit at the front of the room, with a whiteboard on the wall and an occupied door visible to the side. Round table covered with sensory and activity items, including fidget toys, puzzles, craft materials, modelling kits, a plush toy, bubble play items and educational games. The table sits in a room beside a window, with art supplies and paintbrushes visible in the background.

By listening to the people who use its services, the team has introduced a range of improvements to make care more welcoming, inclusive and responsive.

From a pizza party designed to gather feedback in a relaxed setting to new waiting room whiteboards that encourage ongoing conversations, young people's views are driving change across the service.

Their feedback has led to improvements including nature-themed artwork, more comfortable seating and lighting, sensory and fidget toys, and a dedicated sensory room. Artwork created by service users is also displayed in clinic spaces, helping to create environments that reflect the young people who use them.

Most recently, CYPMHS East launched a Young People's Participation Group, giving young people a direct role in shaping future developments.

By listening, acting and working together, the team is ensuring young people and families remain at the heart of service improvement.

Comfortable therapy room with soft seating, including a beanbag, armchairs and a sofa. A coffee table in the centre holds a tub of fidget toys and tissues, while whiteboards and a large window create a bright and welcoming space.
