We've been shortlisted for two 2020 HSJ Patient Safety Awards!

06 Jul 20

We are proud to announce that the Trust has been shortlisted for this year’s National Health Service Journal Patient Safety Awards (HSJ) in two categories:

  • Changing Culture Award – “Fostering a Culture of Safety”
  • Improving Safety in Medicines Management Initiative – “Medicines Optimisation Clinic"

Changing Culture Award – Fostering a Culture of Safety

We have developed a multifaceted approach to improving safety, with its success being built upon the engagement of the whole Trust, particularly frontline staff. A number of effective approaches to improving safety have been delivered including creating platforms for open and honest reporting, for learning from incidents and for working together, so that we keep improving.

Improving Safety in Medicines Management Initiative – Medicines Optimisation Clinic

A Medicines Optimisation Clinic, led by our Pharmacists, was established to pilot working more closely with other healthcare professionals to provide more individualised care, monitor outcomes more carefully and review medicines more frequently. They supported and enhanced the safety of service users with mental ill health by optimising the use of their medicines, improving patient (service user) safety and contributing to enhanced service user care and experience.

Our Executive Director for Quality and Safety, Dr Jane Padmore said: “HPFT’s Quality Strategy has safety at its forefront and we have all been working tirelessly to ensure we have a just and fair culture throughout the organisation, which is honest and open. This is about asking services users what matters to them and what will enable them to feel safe when they are at their most vulnerable, as this is a key component of providing high quality services.

I’m also delighted to see the innovative work of our pharmacy team being recognised in this way. Their integrated approach to healthcare has really benefited the safety and experience of care for our service users.

“I’m certain that being shortlisted for these prestigious awards will be a tremendous boost for our staff, as we continue our efforts to keep improving our safety and services.”

The judging panel, made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, have shortlisted the Trust in two categories despite the tough competition from hundreds of excellent applicants. Our shortlisted entries have been selected based on their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that they have had on service user and staff experiences.
